Systems

Chris Elliott was the editor of "Creating systems that work", the Royal Academy of Engineering's guidance on system engineering published in 2007. The guidance brought together the experiences and insights of around 12 system engineers in order to inform the Academy's support for teaching Integrated System Design and to influence the wider engineering community.

At an Academy seminar on The Philosophy of Engineering, Chris presented a lighter overview of the guidance and some of the thinking behind it.

The interaction of law and systems is central to Pitchill's work. This is particularly important for safety regulation, where the law does not easily match the realities of complex systems. "System safety and the law" is a paper presented at the Second International Conference on System Safety in London, 2005.

System safety and the law

When he was first appointed as a Visiting Professor of the Principles of Engineering Design at the University of Bristol, Chris Elliott gave a public lecture entitled "Turning dreams into specifications". This was subsequently published by the Institution of Electrical Engineers and won the Hirst Premium for the best engineering management paper of the year. A later version of the lecture was presented as a Royal Institution Discourse under the title "Incremental decisions in a complex world".
